Reserve Bank of Australia / DFCRC — Central Bank Research Initiative
Detail
Project Acacia was a research initiative led by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) and the Digital Finance Cooperative Research Centre (DFCRC) to explore how digital money and settlement infrastructure could enhance wholesale asset markets. Chainlink Labs participated as a key technology contributor. In the Westpac Institutional Bank use case, Chainlink CRE (Runtime Environment) served as the orchestration layer connecting tokenised assets on DLT with PayTo — Australia's domestic payment infrastructure — enabling Delivery versus Payment (DvP) settlement in real time. 20 use cases were tested across Hedera, XRP Ledger, Ethereum, Redbelly Network, and Canvas Connect. Chainlink's runtime coordinated the asset and cash legs across systems, demonstrating chain-agnostic orchestration across multiple blockchain networks and legacy payment infrastructure. Other participants included Westpac, JPMorgan, Ripple, Fireblocks, Northern Trust, Zerocap, and Imperium Markets. Settlement was tested using wCBDC, tokenised commercial bank deposits, and stablecoins across fixed income, managed funds, repos, carbon credits, and trade payables.
Why it matters
The Reserve Bank of Australia — one of the world's most respected central banks — led a 20-use-case wholesale tokenisation project where Chainlink CRE was the orchestration layer connecting blockchain assets to real payment infrastructure. This is not a DeFi experiment. This is a central bank validating Chainlink as the connective tissue between tokenised markets and traditional settlement systems across multiple chains simultaneously.
