BitGo — Digital asset custodian and issuer of Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC)
In plain English
In plain terms: WBTC is bitcoin repackaged so it can be used on other blockchains, and BitGo is the company that issues it. Moving it between chains needs a bridge. BitGo has just dropped the bridge provider it used since 2024, LayerZero, and switched to Chainlink's CCIP for all $7.3 billion of it — and for everything it issues in future. It is the biggest name in a run of similar switches that started after a $292 million theft from a LayerZero-powered bridge in April. Together the announced moves cover around $14.6 billion.
Detail
Evidence class: PRODUCTION. BitGo announced on 4 August 2026 that it is deprecating its legacy bridging provider and adopting Chainlink CCIP as the exclusive cross-chain infrastructure for Wrapped Bitcoin, with Chainlink's Cross-Chain Token (CCT) standard to be used by default for all future BitGo-issued assets. Scale: WBTC market capitalisation is approximately $7.3-7.7bn depending on source and date. BitGo retains control of token contracts, transfer rate limits and operational policy under the CCT standard. Background: BitGo selected LayerZero in 2024 to extend WBTC to additional networks, initially Avalanche and BNB Chain, under a model requiring BitGo's verifier to approve each transfer alongside LayerZero or Polyhedra. This announcement replaces that arrangement. The wider migration wave — triggered by the 18 April 2026 exploit that drained roughly 116,500 rsETH (about $292m) from a LayerZero-powered bridge used by Kelp DAO. Kelp attributed the breach to a 1-of-1 verifier configuration creating a single point of failure; LayerZero disputed this, stating Kelp had manually selected a non-recommended single-verifier model against guidance, and subsequently said it would no longer support such configurations. LayerZero later issued a public apology. Announced migrations to CCIP since: • Kelp DAO — $1.5bn • Mantle — $2.5bn Super Portal, co-developed with Bybit • Lombard — $1bn+ in bitcoin-backed assets • Solv Protocol — approximately $700m in tokenised bitcoin (SolvBTC, xSolvBTC) across Corn, Berachain, Rootstock and TAC • Virtuals Protocol — $700m+ in VIRTUAL • Re (re.xyz) — reUSD, backed by $475m+ protocol TVL • Kraken — tokenised assets • Tydro • Aave Labs — CCIP selected in July 2026 as the interoperability layer for its multi-chain application • BitGo — $7.3bn+ WBTC CoinDesk placed the running total at approximately $14.6bn following the BitGo announcement, up from $7.24bn beforehand. Stated reasons: protocols migrating have cited CCIP's use of multiple independent Decentralized Oracle Networks per lane with 16 or more security-reviewed node operators, built-in rate-limit protections, and Chainlink Labs' SOC 2 Type 2 examination completed by Deloitte & Touche LLP in April 2026. Boundary of this entry: these are announced migrations. Rollout timelines are largely undisclosed, including BitGo's. Announced value is not the same as completed migration, and the dollar figures are market capitalisations or TVL rather than volume settled through CCIP.
Why it matters
The largest single competitive displacement documented in this database, and the clearest available evidence that CCIP is being selected on security grounds under commercial pressure rather than adopted in pilot conditions. BitGo is a NYSE-listed regulated custodian and WBTC is the dominant bitcoin-backed token, so the decision carries more weight than protocol-level migrations of comparable dollar value. The causal chain is unusually well documented: a specific exploit on a named date, a public dispute over verifier configuration, and a sequence of dated migration announcements totalling roughly $14.6bn across four months. The figures are announced rather than completed, and that distinction is preserved throughout this entry.
